This is a Jaques club-size (4.4" King) Staunton design set from 1849, the first
year of manufacture, and therefore this set is one of the oldest Staunton sets in existence. The
above set came in its original mahogany box with Staunton's original signature. Staunton hand-signed
only approximately 300 of the boxes, after which Jaques began using a facsimile of Staunton's signature.
I have another and even older 1849 Jaques Staunton club set in the collection, which is the second-oldest
Staunton set in the world. |
