Here’s Randy’s page with the image and links to the awful story of the guy’s encounter with Verizon. http://xkcd.com/verizon/ I tried to listen to the recording but after about ten minutes I had to stop before I smashed my computer. I don’t exactly understand why the failblog thinks it’s a win; the actual math works out to two cents (or point zero two cents, I forget which). The failblog page read a symbol wrong (Doug knows what it was but he’s not here–he was really irritated when he first saw this page.)
And one more cool thing. After this image circulated on the internet, the bank called here for Randy. They called a couple of times, including at 7pm, before he called them back. The caller was from our bank’s headquarters in Charlotte, and her dad, an engineer, had seen the check and let his daughter know since it was her bank. She was very concerned about the security of the digital blurring that Randy had done, but Randy was confident that he has obscured it sufficiently.
I was looking at failblog.org and I ran across this one — look at the name on the check! (Failblog.org does say that it was originally from xkcd.) http://failblog.org/2009/03/18/bill-payment-win/
Jenny, that was fun! Doug is dozing on the little couch behind me, and I got the woman to say, “Hey, Doug, time to be waking up and eating bagels!” and it startled the heck out of him.
I joined Twitter to follow the Iran protests — it’s been really interesting and inspiring. Go internet! Go YouTube, for relaxing standards on showing violent videos, because the press has been banned from Iran:
“In general, we do not allow graphic or gratuitous violence on YouTube,” the company said in a statement. “However, we make exceptions for videos that have educational, documentary, or scientific value. The limitations being placed on mainstream media reporting from within Iran make it even more important that citizens in Iran be able to use YouTube to capture their experiences for the world to see.”
Well I’m on 98th and Madison, so yeah it was 6 streets and 2 avenues away, which is pretty close. My roommate walked by it later and saw all the cops and everything.
I agree it seems like he’s doing well, but is he caving in too many areas? What about Guantanamo, why did that happen? And gays in the military — I feel like it’s too early to be so laudatory, but welcome evidence to the contrary.
David Gergen has worked in four different presidential administrations (of both parties), so he has a unique perspective on the presidency. He was also skeptical of President Obama throughout the early days of the administration. I think his commentary here is symbolic of a growing consensus:
“As someone who has deep roots in presidencies of the past, I must say that I was among those who worried early on that he was taking on too much, too fast. My experience has been that a White House is able at best to handle one or two big issues, and when it suddenly has five or six balls in the air, it almost always drops one or two. Barack Obama has at least a half dozen flying above him — the economy, health care, global warming, Afpak, Iran, Iraq — the list goes on and on. So, I have been worried.
But one of the lessons I have also learned is that every fresh generation of leaders can teach a thing or two to older generations about how to get things done. And maybe, just maybe, we have a President who can do it all and do it with grace and style.”
“Hot Rod” Blago is at it again! Now he’s singin’ Elvis and swingin’ those hips. Go Blago!!

Here’s a funny article about crocs (we were talking about them at dinner for Mom’s birthday):

Check this article out– only 6 percent of American scientists identify themselves as Republican. That says a lot about what education and free-thinking can do to your political views.

I never knew skateboarding could be over-the-top crazy, but it is, as this 3-minute video shows.

Yeah, the bike prank is funnier.
Hmm…I saw that on TV a couple weeks ago, and it’s funny…I guess.
But come on, no where near as funny as the Bike Race prank. It is like, the perfect prank.
That’s definitely funny, but how about this ad. “At The Rrrreeeddd House … where black people and white people buy furniture.”
MSNBC article, including the YouTube link: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/30814287/
Hahahah! Evvie that’s hilarious.
