This article is pretty cool–astronomers saw a burst that they calculated based on red-shift data that occurred 13.1 billion years ago, only 630 million years after the Big Bang.
Thoughts?
This is a new category - really it’s ask anyone, but it’s about movie plot questions. In American Psycho, and if you want to enjoy the movie in the future and haven’t seen it don’t read this — but did he do it or not? Are we not supposed to really know? I think in the end he was just psycho and imagined himself killing. Is that right?
This series of photographs is just adorable.
Cousin Randy is having a book published. There is an article in tomorrow’s NYT about it. B-3 his Mother said. It will be sold on his web-site.
I know I was at the forefront of the movement to ban birthday posts, but forget that — happy birthday Evvie, and belated happy birthday to Ricky and Linda!
I hope everyone has some nice party time.
You recently mentioned that Barbie is Tedder’s aunt. I’ve been trying to figure out how that is. From previous Ask Auntie Sues I’ve learned that Tedder’s (biological) parents are Tillie and Skydiver. So one of their parents is also Barbie’s parent?
Tedder was born in 1991, so if Tillie and Tedder’s Grandma were each only one year old when they had puppies (I don’t know how old dogs become moms), Tedder’s Grandma could have been born in 1989. If she then was also a much older mom at age eight in 1997, Barbie is about twelve years old. Maybe it makes more sense if they are related through Tedder’s Grandpa; I’m guessing being a doggie dad at both ages one and eight is easier than being a doggie mom.
It would also make sense if you are factoring in human families, if Tedder’s Human Grandma is Barbie’s Human Mom.
Marshall, how does a regular person, say, a dog groomer living in Wisconsin, find a research-based answer to this question: Which dog food is the best? So far, the “research” that I’ve seen has all been funded by a dog food company. I really hope the rest of the world isn’t like this! How do you think a non-insider finds an unbiased answer to a question like that? A question which isn’t covered by Consumer Reports.
From New York Times, an excerpt of pirate story
Meanwhile, members of the Navy Seals were flown in by fixed-wing aircraft. They parachuted into the sea with inflatable boats and were picked up by the Bainbridge. On Sunday, the pirates, their fuel gone, were drifting toward the Somali coast. They agreed to accept a tow from the Bainbridge, the senior officials said. At first, the towline was 200 feet long, but as darkness gathered and seas became rough, the towline was shortened to 100 feet, the officials said. It was unclear if this was done with the pirates’ knowledge.
At dusk, a single tracer bullet was seen fired from the lifeboat. The intent was unclear, but it ratcheted up the tension and Seal snipers at the stern rail of the Bainbridge fixed night-vision scopes to their high-powered rifles, getting ready for action.
What they saw was the head and shoulders of two of the pirates emerging from the rear hatch of the lifeboat. Through the window of the front hatch they saw the third pirate, pointing his AK-47 at the back of Captain Phillips, who was seen to be tied up.
That was it: the provocation that fulfilled the president’s order to act only if the captain’s life was in imminent danger, and the opportunity of having clear shots at each captor. The order was given. Senior defense officials, themselves marveling at the skill of the snipers, said each took a target and fired one shot.
I am watching the Tar Heels in honor of Evvie. But, it’s called the Final Four however we are down to two. Isn’t there a name for this game? Anyway they are winning, depite Michigan’s huge vocal crowd.
Someone on my facebook list posted this article about how the younger generation is shunning voicemail. 1, it made me realize I need a blackberry or new phone becauase I’m just too slow at texting on my phone and 2, I don’t feel as guilty about hating listening to phone messages.
