Susan, Arastu, Eric and I saw the new Batman movie today. We got there 40 minutes early but we still had to sit alone. Talk about popularity.
The movie itself was fantastic, with great action, plot, acting, emotional content, and camera work. But even though everything was so awesome, the movie was totally dominated by Heath Ledger’s unbelievable performance as the Joker. He was so insane, crazy, and evil but still believable that I still can’t get it out of my head. I’m sure Susan and Arastu will agree with me. Everybody should go see this movie.
The other actors should get mention for stellar performances as well. I’ve always loved Aaron Eckhardt after seeing him in Thank You For Smoking, and Christian Bale is great as usual, as is Michael Cain and Morgan Freeman. Maggie Gyllenhal’s character was pretty boring, but I guess she did an ok job.

What Jenny isn’t mentioning is that Batman and Robin were our childhood heroes. We watched the show every week(back in the good old days when the kids watched TV while the parents smoked and drank Scotch in the other room) and then played re-enactments. We had a Batmobile, or maybe it was the neighbor’s. I think Jenny was usually Robin. The Bat Cave was under the basement stairs. Thankfully, I can’t remember any other details except the heady rush and loud noise of the Batmobile, hurtling down the sidewalk on our hill, and how painfully sharp the black plastic bat fins were after the crash.
So Jenny might be a little traumatized.
It’s far from cartoonish. Did you see the first one? It’s really nothing like any of the other comic book movies–it’s way, way more serious. The only that that’s sort of unbelievable is some of Batman’s gadgetry…but it’s sort of necessary too.
I like how Marshall figured out how to have his post appear next to the photo. It’s an improvement to the blog.
Everyone’s convinced me to go see the move, but still, what I percieve as cartoonish aspects of it make me wary. Also it seems sad about Heath Ledger.
I want to go
Julie, I’d like to go but the Princeton Consultants annual picnic is Saturday afternoon (if anyone wants to go, great).
I thought Heath Ledger was absolutely unbelievable. I secretly thought going into it that I would not be as enthusiastic as everyone else, but I was wrong. The whole movie is great (although it might contain one half-hour too many) but Heath Ledger is sensational. Go see it!
Gramma, how about if I go with you to see Batman on Saturday afternoon? Maybe Ricky and Doug would go, and maybe Jenny and Jon? I want to see it too. Marshall, thanks for the review. I, too, love Aaron Eckhardt after TYFS, not least because he has such an un-moviestar-like surname.
I saw Mama Mia and if I had been watching it on TV I would have turned it off. Merile Streep was good but too old for the part. My friends wanted to see it. I may have to see Batman alone.
Did you keep thinking about Heath Ledger being dead? I definitely plan to see this, although my movie-friend wants to see mama Mia, eeeek.
