Haha, i actually have a soft spot for ol’ Ashcroft too, for both those reasons mom gave, and also because he stood up to Alberto regarding warrantless wiretapping whilst laying on his sick bed!
I feel sorry for Ashcroft in this instance. Also I always have a soft spot for him, politics aside, because of Let the Mighty Eagle Soar and also he was so clever on Jon Stewart or Colbert. NOT that I agree with anything he does or thinks!
My laptop crashed *hard* and it is gone. If you (”me?” “yes, you!”) are not backing up regularly, remember — the question is not ‘if’ but ‘when’. Fortunately almost everything on my laptop was backed up onto Stripey, our great 1-Terabyte NAS. (Thanks to mom/Jenny who kept bugging me to backup regularly.) I’ll get a new laptop tomorrow but meanwhile I am hopping between computers.
IMHO either the McCain Girls think they’re legitimate or else it is a very clever and well-executed ploy by somebody.
Meanwhile, I’m sure that you’ve all signed up for this book about McCain. If you’re under 18, don’t click on the link due to the profane language, instead just appreciate the cover photo:
I don’t believe that they’re being serious. Who are they? They have to know that their voices 100% suck and that they’re not hot at all. Why would you ever make a video like this if you were being serious?
After the events of the last few days, Mark Penn has asked to give up his role as Chief Strategist of the Clinton Campaign; Mark, and Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates, Inc. will continue to provide polling and advice to the campaign.
Geoff Garin and Howard Wolfson will coordinate the campaign’s strategic message team going forward.
My laptop hard drive crashed yesterday and I needed to reset my Schoenhopfer password in order to post.
Ev - sorry that UNC lost.
Charlton Heston was a great actor but I am so opposed to handguns that I lost my respect for him after he got involved with the NRA, eventually becoming its President (1996-2003) and chief spokesperson.
Did everyone hear that Charlton Heston died? This is actually kind of good news for me, because Charlton said that if this situation ever arose, I could have his gun.
I am back after weathering Spring Break at the kennel, I mean exclusive premium pet lodging (Jenny’s yellow pages wording.) Gramma came and helped by answering the phone, cooking dinner, cookies, cake and chex mix, and making Packer dog sweaters with a #4 on the back, which sold like hot cakes.
The high-mindedness and subtlety on glorious display in Philadelphia last week won over the press, gave Obama enough breathing room to turn to Iraq and the economy, and intensified the devotion of the kind of educated liberal voter once drawn to Adlai Stevenson, who virtually created the type. But it was Nixon’s Checkers speech, with its cheesy confession that he owed his parents thirty-five hundred dollars with interest (and loved America), that carried the day in 1952, and has more or less defined successful campaign rhetoric ever since.
I notice that this will be my fourth consecutive post with no responses, but I don’t mind! I will continue to address the silent majority who, quite frankly, love my posts.
Here is my current theory as to how the race will play out: after North Carolina (or potentially Indiana), enough of the remaining superdelegates will commit to Obama that they will put him over the top. Once he hits the magic number (2025) Hillary will be forced to exit the race…right?
This is an interesting article, even though it’s by Joe Klein (a popular Crumiller target after the false denial regarding his authorship of Primary Colors):
The article is about how Obama’s true "patriotism" problem is that he doesn’t get the people pumped up enough about the USA. For instance, he doesn’t say things like "it’s morning again in America" and "there is nothing wrong with America that cannot be fixed by what is right with America." He makes the argument that only in America could his story be possible, but doesn’t hammer home "the future of America" angle.
Who does Jimmy Carter support? No way is he going to tell you!:
“We are very interested in the primaries. Don’t forget that Obama won in my state of Georgia. My town, which is home to 625 people, is for Obama, my children and their spouses are pro-Obama. My grandchildren are also pro-Obama. As a superdelegate, I would not disclose who I am rooting for but I leave you to make that guess,” he said.
Evvie I finally read the Karl Rove article– it was interesting. Marshall haha for the most rickrolling today. Dad rickrolled me — I got a call from him and when I picked up it was the never gonna give you up… instead of a person.

Jenny, when that comic went up, I thought of you! Also, Doug and I watched The Lion King again this weekend, so I have "Circle of Life" in my head. One of the circular things about my life is that Juan Melli (or a relative? All I remember is the last name) wrote a really great post, I think on Kos, that was reposted widely, and I saw it on one of the Virginia blogs. And he used Randy’s comic to illustrate a post in response to you . . . [Elton John sings in my head]
I had a weekend of movies, and there turned out to be an interesting feature in common. The first was actually a tv miniseries/documentary about climbing Mt. Everest, set in Nepal and Tibet. The second was "A Mighty Heart", the story of the Daniel Pearl kidnapping and murder, set in Pakistan, The third was "The Kite Runner", set in Afghanistan, the US, and Pakistan. I recommend the movies highly–I remember that Susan was effusively enthusiastic about "The Kite Runner" and I share that enthusiasm, in spades. It was a wonderful book and a wonderful movie.
But by the way, we had a big PCDO meeting last night, and we were debating whether to postpone the endorsement for Senator Frank Lautenberg in light of a possible challenger, Tom Byrne, and the possiblity of a candidates’ forum instead of a vote by unanimous consent. I was presiding, and Dad was in the audience. So after the motion was introduced, Dad raised his hand to speak and I didn’t want to call on him because he’s my husband. I called on two other people but finally called on him. The anti-postponement side was aruing both that Lautenberg is great and deserves our endorsement right now, but also that Byrne could have gotten into the race earlier but now it’s just too late to change the procudure. Then Dad made a super good argument– a coup — because the Lautenberg campaign, in response to possible challenges had sent out an email announcing a rally today, where Lautenberg was going to officially announce his campaign. Dad held up the printed email and said Lautenber hadn’t announced either. The motion passed 90 - 50.
Here is a fascinating article by Karl Rove about how HE would go about winning the nomination if he were a Democratic candidate and it came down to the convention:
I didn’t go, but some people I know did and had told me about it before I saw it on the news. They said the banner was really big and had blood splattered all it, and also that they had no idea how they got it in because everyone else had to open their jackets at the door.
Here is an interesting article from CNN about how those online communities like "Second Life" are helpful to autistic people, because users have to explicitly state their emotions with happy faces or sad faces, and interpreting social interactions and emotions are what autistic people have trouble with.
I’m sure everyone is on the edge of their seats waiting to hear how the Tar Heels are doing in the tournament, so I will reluctantly tell you…
They are dominating! They have scored more than 100 points in each game of the first and second rounds, beaten their opponents by an average of over 30 points, and have shot (an outstanding) 64% from the field in the tournament thus far!
Here is a very interesting story about Obama’s rhetoric by a linguistic anthropologist from Yale. She also analyzes McCain, Hillary, and George W.’s speeches and speaking styles:
San Diego forward Rob Jones is a grandson of Jim Jones, the leader of the Peoples Temple cult who died after leading more than 900 people to their deaths by mass suicide and murder in Guyana in 1978. The player’s father, Jim Jones Jr., is the adopted son of Jim Jones and survived that day because he was away playing in a basketball tournament.

I was pondering posting that link about McCain, so I’m glad Dad did. You can’t come off looking much worse than that.
Here’s a good one: John Ashcroft’s horrendous slip of the tongue.

plus, what the hell is with the weird religious imagery!?!?
The McCain Girls! On one hand, they are being serious. On the other hand, they totally suck!
Who’s being serious? I don’t get it.

Keep commenting Evvie. There are many lurkers here.
Evvie the Nation article is interesting, I’m sure you’re right that Obama will now start talking about America the Great.
I recently an article in the New Yorker that makes a similar argument:
I notice that this will be my fourth consecutive post with no responses, but I don’t mind! I will continue to address the silent majority who, quite frankly, love my posts.

And I found a 1-800-rickrolling service! You can sign up your cell phone to temporarily rickroll anyone who calls. http://www.1800rickroll.com
Wikipedia is **such a good collaborative forum and so up-to-date** that the article on rickrolling says:
"…The meme increased in popularity as a 2008 April Fool’s Day joke through various media, including Youtube rickrolling all of its featured videos on that day.[2]"

Hmmm… Muppets video, am I getting rickrolled? Apparently not… here goes…
