Can there be new posts in the ILN category? by Aunt Julie on March 31, 2008 at 11:10 am
Jon, I really enjoyed reading the posts about Richmond. It really is a beautiful city, especially in the spring, and everyone should come and visit!
I am trying out making a new post in the “Illustrated London News” category, just to see if it works. It might be a little easier to find old ones if they each have their own post, with a descriptive title. Just asking?

He got into the program at Mount Sinai! I don’t know the details, I hope he tells us. He’s having a party tonight, unrelated, so he might be busy.

I cheated a tiny bit on the Rickroll poll by Aunt Julie on at 8:51 am
In order to maintain the image of someone who is, er, “with it”, I clicked on YES. However, remorse has set in and I must admit that although I didn’t have to Google “Rickroll” to find out what it was, instead I used my very own bio-Google, which was to ask my kids. So I am not nearly as cool as I present myself.
Just setting the record straight.

The Weather by Marshall on March 24, 2008 at 11:39 am
Everybody I know is getting really sick of this weather. There’s usually variation–some cold days, some warm days, but an average that steadily increases. This year, every day seems exactly the same. We don’t get warm days or cold days. This sums it up rather nicely:

Spell checker and other details by jenny on March 14, 2008 at 11:22 am
I think I solved the problem of the spellchecker, which included some mucking around. It only works if you have “Use visual editor when writing” checked on your blog user profile. If you have been using the visual editor (with editing buttons for bold, italic etc. above the box for writing) you should now see the ABC check icon in the comments. Gramma, Maggie, Suzy and others, I made sure you have it checked, so the spellchecker now should work in both comments and main post page. I’m not exactly sure how it works but I think if you click the little ABC icon it checks the spelling and underlines suspicious words.
If you want to check your setting, go to site admin/Users/Your Profile. On the upper left is the checkbox. If you want me to do this for you I will, just let me know.
Also, it would also be great if people learned how to insert links into their posts. Aunt Julie is among those who have learned this. The key is using the visual editor, and then recognizing the link icon among the editing buttons. It’s a chain link that’s shaped a little like a sideways number 8. Once you type in what you want your link to say, like “funny article,” you then select those words and click on the link icon. Then you paste in he address and hit ok.

Movie cliches and conventions by Aunt Julie on March 13, 2008 at 11:43 am
Evan’s post about the bad guy knowing exactly when he had to hang up in order to avoid the trace came just after Doug showed me this chart, a careful analysis of violence in the Rambo movies.

My first post! by Maggie on March 12, 2008 at 9:24 pm
Hello famillllyyyy!!!
So really I have wanted to post about my new job but I just heard this great story and I wanted to share so that’s brings me here, I have to tell this story. I’ll get to the job.
I just heard on the news about this 12 year old girl with spinal muscular atrophy who has a black lab as a service dog. She has written stories where the lab is the main character and he goes sledding, ice skating, all the things that she will never do, as she is only predicted to live into her late teens. In the interview (on the news) she talks about how he is her best friend and is the main character in the stories. Her mom has helped her and now the stories are published. This just really touched me!! Here is her website (I know it is super easy but I don’t know how to make it a hyperlink). The website flashes obnoxiously, but there are some cute pics…

…just a great, inspiring story…
ok, now I will write about what is going on with me, so stop reading now if you have anything remotely better to do!
I am in Phoenix and I have a job as a program coordinator with the Maricopa County Juvenile Court System. I work for the State Supreme Court in the County Juvenile Court. So I am a state employee hired by the county. The program I am with is called CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), the national website is http://www.nationalcasa.org/ if you wanna check it out.
A CASA is a volunteer that is appointed by the court to advocate for a child that is dependent on the state. All of the children are in Child Protective Services and in ‘the system’. This advocate is one person who represents the child in court that does not have any other invested interests besides what is best for the child. The idea is everyone comes to the table with an agenda of some sort, mothers attorney, fathers attorney, CPS, ect. Because the CASA is a volunteer there are there solely to represent the best interest of the child. They are like a guardian ad litem but with time.
I am the person that manages these volunteers. It is a tetious job of getting volunteers certified, trained and assigned on appropriate cases and being their resource, contact person through the process. CASA’s have to undergo backround checks, 20 hours of training and polygraph testing among other things! It is a huge commitment to become a CASA.
Thus far I love my job because I am doing social work but learning about the court and legal system. It is great experience, exposure and networking. I really love learning about the legal system and how this all works. Who knows what I’ll think in another few months….
Moving on, It is very different to be out of school STILL! To fill my time, I got a part time job at a gym, lifetime fitness. I work Saturday mornings at 6am, it keeps me out of trouble and sober….. I really work there for the free membership of steam rooms, hot tubs and marble topped locker rooms that as a fresh social worker I could no way afford otherwise! I have met some great people too. Amare Stoudemire (Phoenix Suns basketball player) is a member and knows me, ok recognizes me (which consists of saying “hey, what’s up” when he checks in and a smile, nod and “see ya later” when he leaves…) Hey, good enough! Last week I ran a 190 mile relay on a team of 12 people. I ran 15 miles in 3 different legs over a 24 hour period. We had a lot of fun and our team was the road dogs. We hooked up speakers to the outside of of van and took turns hooking up our ipods blaring our favorite music. It was quite the experience. more details upon request if anyone is still reading…
ok, so that’s my novel. I don’t know what any of these choices mean posting this post so I hope this works and fits in! (Am I in the right category, are the blog police going to fine me?) I am making my spring / summer resolution to post!!
