Hilarious Comics by Marshall on February 29, 2008 at 2:35 pm

I don’t know who’s heard of PBF comics, but it’s one of the top-ranked comics on the net. I showed this one to Susan earlier today and she thought it was pretty hilarious:

Here’s a few other of my favorites:

Leap Day by Gramma on at 7:44 am

Today is leap day.  In the English-speaking world, it was a long tradition that women could propose marriage only during leap years.  Long ago bachelors who wanted to avoid matrimony would make themselves scarce at that time.

Veepstakes! by Evan on February 28, 2008 at 10:30 pm

Well, now that the nominations are unofficially decided, let’s start talking about Vice-Presidents!!

The Republican side is pretty boring, as it will be some old governor probably like Charlie Crist or this Rob Portman character I keep hearing about.

The Democratic side, on the other hand, is super interesting!! Who will Obama pick? Today I thought of some interesting choices: How about Obama/Bloomberg, or Obama/Powell?!? Those are both in the more independent vein, but for a more “Democratic” pick how about Wesley Clark?! Jim Webb would also be good but I don’t think Obama should pick another senator.

Right now I think my favorite pick would be Wesley Clark. He brings the foreign and military experience and gravitas, but doesn’t seem TOO old and stuffy. However, I know he’s a big Hillary supporter (but he also wants to be president.)

What does everyone else think?

Favorite Links by jenny on at 8:49 am

What are your favorite links of late? I’m always curious about where people find things, especially Marshall and Evvie - I can tell they go places I don’t usually go.

My favorites of late are the Huffington Post, which has professional writers and always has content and links about the latest political developments. It also has a dose of entertainment/ fluff.

I give credit for Aunt Julie for showing me reddit.com which is like a quick-dose of boredom relief that doesn’t lose its efficacy with frequent use — it has a continually changing list of favorite links, which are generated by the users, who click on up or down arrows to make content rise or fall on the list. The ratio of not-dumb comments to dumb is the highest of any site I go to– mainly there a bunch of people who chime in with quick and witty comments, perfect for reading for 30 seconds or less.

- Ask him who he’s supporting in the primary and why
- Ask him his favorite parts of the heist story
- Ask him about the gourmet dish we cooked yesterday
- Demand that he display his Tedder loyalty (where’s his lapel pin???!!!!)
- Find out how he did in his Oscar pool
- Make him state for the record his position on robot bodies
- Vote! Susan has room in her apartment for: Arastu vs. lab

NY Times - Americans Change Faiths at Rising Rate, Report Finds by Marshall on at 6:41 pm

I thought this article would be interesting for everybody–it’s about how more and more Americans are leaving the faith they grew up with for others. It specifically mentions that people aren’t becoming increasingly atheistic or agnostic, but that they’re leaving organized faith, choosing more “personal” religions (whatever that means). It did also mention that the group dealing the biggest loss was (I thought unsurprisingly) the Roman Catholic Church.

My opinion probably doesn’t count much, but I would say that in a country such as ours that promotes diversity, its the religions that place the greatest stake on traditions that might be considered cumbersome that are losing their members. I bet (but I might be wrong) that fewer Jews follow Kosher, fewer Catholics fast when [I forget when they fast], and fewer give up things for Lent–those who do use the tradition as an excuse to improve themselves (like New Years resolutions), and not because they’re instructed to.

Anyway, here’s the article:

Brag Alert, Dog Show by suzys on February 24, 2008 at 12:11 pm

Barbie (Tedder’s neice) won the Open Obedience part of the International Dog Show in Chicago yesterday and the day before, with scored of 196.5 and 196 out of a possible 200. She defeated all the pointy smarty-pants dogs like the Border Collies and Shelties. Cocoanut, Barbie’s daughter, competed in Rally  (a new sport) with Linda Waco handling, and got a 98/100 and 96/100. She would have been more competitive but she spent quite a bit of time prancing along the ring barrier smiling at the audience, who were layered 6 deep. There is always a Nation of Islam convention  on the other half of McCormick Place, so she had to gaze at the elaborate headwear of some of the women who wandered over to watch. So, basically, Barbie worked hard and Cocoanut had a wonderful time making new friends. I think she managed to lick over a hundred people in one day. After we competed we had a champagne toast, and I bought all of the Labs a pig ear.

Greatest “heist” ever? by Susan on February 23, 2008 at 10:45 am

This is just super hilarious. These four college stoners hatched this scheme to get rich by creating aliases and dressing up in disguise, stealing rare books from their school library, and then selling them to Christie’s. There are just too many priceless details to include; you really have to read the whole thing. Whatever clerk wrote this was quite simply having a ball. I don’t even want to give any parts of it away; just read it & I’ll leave my favorite part in comments.

Curry’s Paradox by Marshall on February 22, 2008 at 2:36 pm

I was looking around on a riddle website, and I came across a paradox that I found pretty clever. It’s called Curry’s Paradox. I’ve shamelessly taken the description from wikipedia. Let’s say we have the following statement:

If this sentence is true, then Santa Claus exists.

We need not believe, beforehand, that the sentence is true or that Santa Claus exists. But we can ask, hypothetically, if the sentence is true, then does Santa Claus exist?

If the sentence is true, then what it says is true, namely that if the sentence is true, then Santa Claus exists. Therefore the answer to the hypothetical question must be yes: Santa Claus does exist if the sentence is true. However, that is exactly what the sentence states: not that Santa Claus exists, but that he exists if the sentence is true, which is what the hypothetical answer just established. Therefore the sentence is true after all, and since we have established that Santa Claus exists if the sentence is true, and that it is true, it follows that Santa Claus must exist.
