When they gave me the bindi to wear I had no idea what it meant. After the photoshoot I innocently asked Arastu , and he said “it means you’re married!!!” I think red is also the color you wear at weddings. Anyway, later on, when I asked other people, they said it used to mean you’re married but nowadays anyone can wear them. The people who dressed me up though were older so they probably had the more traditional meaning in mind.
In modern times, the bindi has become a decorative item and is worn by unmarried as well as non-Hindu women, in India, Bangladesh and other countries of South Asia. It is no longer restricted in colour or shape. Self-adhesive bindis (also known as sticker bindis) are available. They are made of felt or thin metal, and come with an adhesive on one side. These are simple to apply, disposable substitutes for older tilak bindis. Sticker bindis come in many colors, designs, materials, and sizes. Fancy sticker bindis may be decorated with sequins, glass beads, or rhinestones for extra dazzle.
That’s a beautiful sari. Or whatever you are wearing. And what about the dot on your forehead? I thought that meant you were married. Guess I have a little catching up to do here . . .
Also, Susan, did you get washed away in the NYC rainstorm?
Does this mean Arastu is my grandson-inlaw?
This is great, somehow I didn’t need to pay a dowry for the marriage.
I got back after the tornado. When I was taking the train back from the airport the conductor told us. Apparently it was pretty insane.

Susan should explain — but Gramma said the same thing about the dot indicating marital status so we looked it up. Here’s an article from Snopes and more from wikepedia:

Wow! But who’s the Indian woman with light skin?
