I am very sorry to report that Shevvie died. She was a very good kitty, and we miss her a lot.

Naturally, I thought of Shevvie and baby Evvie playing together when I read this article. There are some really funny and cute parts, proving yet again that animals have emotions.
Here’s a teaser:
If pets are shunted aside, some may seek other ways to solicit attention. Shortly after one friend’s first child was born, the cat, which had been ignored since the baby arrived, started limping dramatically on her hind leg. Many visits to the veterinarian later, the doctor remained unable to find a cause. Then one day the couple noticed that the cat only limped when it came upon the baby. Call it Munchausen’s syndrome by feline.
The rest of the article is here. It’s not too long, and highly recommended.
Does anyone have any canker sore remedies?
While we’re here, any other home remedies people might have? For example, swallowing a spoonful of sugar actually works for hiccups.
Watch this movie and you will get a taste of your matricial grandparents roots. Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin make is worthwhile.
Marshall is home and Evvie is “home.” While he is looking for employment Marshall is going to start cleaning up our basement where we’re going to install a large screen movie thing and make a theater of sorts - we’re not finishing the basement but cleaning it and hopefully having it painted.
Tedder is back to his very old self, he can even open the cupboard and wreak havoc on the kitchen by looting the garbage if we fail to put the rubber band on the knobs.
Today I’m starting my marathon service as a grand juror in Trenton. I have to go every Thursday from 9 - 4 until October. According to our instructions it is against the law to speak about the proceedings, even to your spouse.
We’re having a PCDO meeting on the internet and blogging on Sunday — see here — and on Saturday we’re going canoeing in the Pine Barrens on an outing with a group — we did the same thing last year and I up-ended the canoe and Dad and I fell in and ruined our digital camera — it was really embarrassing and not fun and I won’t do the stupid thing of standing up on one side of the canoe ever again.
I have 5 tickets for July 7th. Who is coming?
Susan, I hope you have lights on your bikes if you are riding to class at night.
Let’s try to get the blog back into the upswing! I’ll start off with telling you all about my summer so far.
I got to class 5 days/ week from about 1.30 to 5.30 (although some days, like today, I decide to go to the evening class at 6 instead). Arastu and I bike there and back; it’s about 25 minutes each way.* The “class” is a video lecture. There’s one live Barbri [the bar exam equivalent of Princeton Review or whatever, but with a total monopoly] location in Manhattan, then everywhere else gets the lecture on video one week later. We have different topics every day; today is corporations (yuck) and earlier this week was constitutional law (yay). We have a handout book that we bring to class and as we listen along to the lecture we fill in blanks in the handout. We have about 8 giant books to study from, with practice drills, mini-outlines, etc. They generally do a really good job of getting enthusiastic and engaging professors, so the class isn’t too bad (other than its length).
After the bar exam, we are planning a trip to the Pacific Islands (incl. Fiji and Vanuatu). We’re hoping to do a lot of nature and sporting stuff, and Fiji has it all: trekking up volcanoes, hiking through rainforests, camping, lounging on the beach**, snorkelling, and … scuba diving! Yes, we are getting certified to scuba dive in Brooklyn before we go. Tomorrow is our first appt - a free consultation to determine which lessons are best for us.
We have also been enjoying our yard and patio, and putting it to good use. We’ve had several BBQs already this summer, and we’re having one this Sunday. These BBQs are “BYOE” - “Bring Your Own Everything,” so we don’t have to spend any money. We also study on the table outside. We planted our entire yard with grass and flowers, and the grass looks great (even though it’s getting long and unruly) but the flowers haven’t come up yet.
I’ve also been cooking a lot and shopping at the Coop frequently, so we’ve been eating a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables. Today I’m going to make green goddess dressing, snow peas with mint, and minted green beans with red onion. Tomorrow I’m going to make mahi-mahi with blood orange, avocado, and red onion salsa. (For those who like to cook: if you haven’t checked out epicurious.com, do so immediately.) I haven’t mastered cooking with tofu yet, but that will be my next challenge. Also, Arastu has been doing yoga every day.
So, there’s my update. As you can tell, I am having a great summer. I’m sure I’ll start freaking out and doing nothing but study starting in July, but for May and June I’ve been pretty relaxed and enjoying myself.
* yes, we wear helmets
** yes, I will wear lots of sunscreen
It is Doug Munroe’s 16th birthday today.
I can’t tell when — you can watch it on Cspan – but I can’t tell when. More info on Human Rights Campaign. I don’t understand why these people fighting for this amendment are so concerned about gay marriage. Why does it bother people?  They just want the same rights and recognition for their relationships.
